The breadbasket is a cultural journey. Top of the crop is the rava thosai, a delicate net of suji, onions and chilli - very tasty and full of texture. Others may prefer the meat murtabak. Don't miss the delightful roti salad made of roti canai roll filled with carrots, cucumber and cabbage. An interesting note - the roti canai is served in the shape of a rose bouquet.

The Prawns with Mango and Celery is another winning dish with the sweet mango enhancing the succulent prawns. The crispy and crunchy celery adds texture and taste. The Marmite Chicken is a must-try. The tender chicken is marinated in a thick and tangy marmite sauce.

The Chicken Briyani, cooked with the chicken buried inside the rice, exploded with hot and spicy flavours. The chicken, smothered in a spice paste before cooking, was tender, moist and flavourful and tasted so good against the basmati rice. It was served with some excellent dhal, a little sweet fruit chutney and onion raita. It made a complete and unforgettable meal.

The Portuguese Style fish had boneless fillets dipped in batter, deep-fried and served in a creamy, hot, sweet and sour sauce. I tasted a little mayonnaise in it. The fish was crisp and nice, and went well with rice.

We choose the tuna cutlets for appetizers and much to our delight, they were exactly how we imagined them — crisp on the outside, juicy and flavourful on the inside. Though traditionally the recipe uses mackerel, the tuna chunks tasted just as good and the slight chili aftertaste from the curry powder proved to be addictive.

Next, our steaming bowl of rice went down swiftly with mutton porrial (dry mutton gravy), green rendang chicken (malay green curry), Indonesian claypot prawns, sambal ikan (spicy fish) and Portuguese fish. We thought the mutton dish was particularly impressive as it is presented without the usual layers of fat and the meat was tender and had infused the flavour of the spices nicely. The consistency of the gravy was also a good complement to the soft small cuts of meat.

Rumah Ku has a wide mixture of Indian and Chinese food, as well as single-dish meals on its menu. The menu’s small pasta selection is very popular. Our lunch started with the Rumah Ku XO Mee, an ensemble of egg noodles, chicken slices and vegetables topped with a slightly spicy XO sauce. It was love at first bite as we sank our teeth into the very springy noodles tossed in oyster and dark soy sauce, with XO sauce for additional oomph.

Things got even better with the arrival of the Mutton Porial and Portuguese Fish. The tender, bite-sized mutton pieces were cooked with lots of spices and were piquant. Accustomed to spicy Portuguese-style grilled fish wrapped in banana leaves, Rumah Ku’s cream-based version took us by surprise. The fish fillets, deep- fried in a thin batter, were coated in mildly sweet mayonnaise-based sauce — we jostled for the last piece. This is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes.
